Embroidery
Embroidery has long been one of my favorite hobbies. When I first saw the famous Bayeux's Tapestry, which shows the conquest of England by the Normans on a length of 68 meters, I was immediately fascinated that such a complex story could be told with this technique. Since then, I am passionate about the art of embroidery.
Embroidery is practical. An embroidery hoop is easy to pack and work on the train or on a park bench. In addition, embroidery is back in fashion, especially in the context of the current upcycling movement - you can breathe new life into old garments with a beautiful embroidery and even artistically cover holes or stains. But even for big fashion companies embroidery is still done by hand. Some things just can’t be done by machines!
Another trend is embroidery as a wall decoration. More and more young artists are offering embroidered works of art that can be hung on the wall directly in the hoop.
For embroidery you do not need many utensils - embroidery hoop, needle and thread - which you get quite cheap at the retailer.
You should not be put off by complicated stitches. Most are much simpler than you might think and you usually get by with a few classic ones. I mostly use stitches like backstitch, stem stitch, knot stitch, satin stitch and fishbone stitch. Don’t worry, there are numerous guides on the internet that will help you learn the tricks. Just practice with an old piece of fabric, then it will work!
Embroidery can also be wonderfully combined with beads and sequins etc. This creates unique gifts for adults and children.
I hope I could inspire some of you to pick up a needle and try embroidering. Granted, it takes a little patience. But the result is always worth it.
Have fun!
